ABOUT

Thank you for considering Ballast. My name is Simon Lacey, and this is my art studio.

I was born in Halifax at Grace Maternity Hospital and my family moved around as I was growing up.  I’ve lived in London, ON, Vancouver, Minneapolis, and Boise. I majored in Industrial Design with a specialization in Multimedia and Drafting at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. I love rock climbing and for my senior project, I developed a patented anchor (US 23598) designed for inward-flaring cracks.

After graduation, I worked at Whiteboard Design, an industrial design firm in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I then worked at a Wilderness Therapy program in Idaho, during which I created and produced the board game “Forlorn.”

Eventually, I joined Trademark in Boise, Idaho, where I played a key role in transforming the company from a sign shop into a full-service public art and design studio. Now, I have returned to my birthplace to establish Ballast, my own industrial art studio.

The studio is named after the heavy weight that helps keep boats upright and afloat, and I use the plural “studios” to reflect the collaborative nature of my work with my clients, and should the project require, additional contractors.
